The Nathan Phenomenon -- Sunday January 19th, 2014

Wow. What can we say? After almost two years of sharing Nathan's hilarious dancing with our facebook posse, someone finally noticed. Nathan was featured on The Ellen Show and all of the sudden we got a crash course in how videos go viral.

He's been featured on the Today Show, Good Morning America, Inside Edition, Fox and Friends, and the list just keeps going. This is one of our favorites...

We've had so many questions about Nathan's story, so we'll just share a few things here to answer our FAQ's.

First, Nathan came into BisB in late 2011, and was officially adopted in Dec. 2012. His mom was his foster mom for a while and ultimately realized he was happier at her home than anywhere else he'd been before. So she adopted him. However, since she's still a volunteer/foster mom with our group, we get updates on Nathan all the time. She's an amazing photographer, and, of course, has camera in hand to catch him when he's dancing in his green chair.

The big question: "Is he just really itchy?" Well, not really, although just like for us, we're sure the back scratching feels pretty good! Nathan actually has gorgeous skin, which is a challenge with any Chinese Crested, so kudos, mom! This dancing behavior is something he started on his own and now does on command for lots of praise from his mom, and treats, too.

"What's with the other dogs in the back?" Well, they know the drill. When Mom says, "Wiggle it!" they all line up behind the green chair and wait. When it's over, everyone gets treats! In the background are Diamond, an AHT being fostered in the home; and Nathan's brothers Kramer and Gilligan. Gilligan's the one with the wacky hair, he is a hoot!

"Why was Nathan considered unadoptable?" To answer this, we'll share a little of his back-story. Nathan first came to the attention of another rescue in Ohio in 2008, when his owner died and he was left alone in the home for over a week with all of her dogs. He was moved to several homes over the next few years, and apparently no one was willing or able to keep Nathan for more than a year before moving him on.

Then in 2011, a BisB member, familiar with his story, was able to get him into our rescue. He was first fostered in a wonderful home in Indiana, where we discovered his fear of men. Although training did help minimize his fear aggression, it never completely went away, Living in a house with three men just wasn't a fit for Nathan. As we occasionally do in rescue, we tried moving him to another foster home to see if that would help. It did!

We want to say that not all rescue dogs are as challenging as Nathan was. Dogs are incredibly resilient creatures and many of them-- even ones from awful backgrounds-- can adjust very quickly with little or no training.

Nathan was an unusual case in that he required ongoing training to address his issues. Part of this process includes changing behavior, but also minimizing triggers and helping the dog find success where it is possible. His foster mom did this all the while trying to figure out what type of forever home would give him the best chance of continued improvement and success. At one point, we believed we'd found one, but the adopter realized he was not a good fit for her lifestyle and soon returned him. At that point, his foster mom decided to adopt him permanently.

Successful Auction! -- Friday September 2nd, 2011

Beginning in mid-July and running through the end of August, Bald is Beautiful held an online auction fundraiser to support our rescue. Items were generously donated by many different volunteers and supporters. With items like a doggie stroller, sling, clothes, jewelry and other gift item, we were able to raise just over $2,000. This will help to provide vet care, such as standard spay and neutering, as well as other more serious health issues, such as skin allergies and even heart worm. Thanks to everyone who made this auction a success!

Update on NC5 -- Sunday May 29th, 2011

All of the five dogs Bald is Beautiful took in from North Carolina have homes! Renee (now Kenley) and Jasper are living in North Carolina with their new families. Hurley is living in Knoxville, TN with his mom and doggie-brother, Buddy. Kommet will soon be living in New Jersey and Kevin, in Manhattan, where he'll join one of our Mississippi 3, Rembrandt's family. High style for five dogs that started out in a rural shelter. We're especially proud of our little miracle girl, Renee. Way to go, Bald is Beautiful! (Update, August 2011... unfortunately for Hurley, his adoptive home was not a good match for his energy level and temperament. He is back in foster care and doing amazing. He really is a fantastic guy and we look forward to finding him the right match for his forever home.)
